LUMINESCENT NANOPARTICLES TO ENSURE NEUTRALIZATION OF BIOLOGICAL AGENTS

Explosions are used to destroy biological agents, such as anthrax, which can live for hundreds of years and withstand extreme temperatures. To ensure successful destruction of such agents, it is important to know the temperature distribution inside the fireball of an explosion. ASL is developing luminescent nanoparticles that can be used to measure the temperature inside an explosion. These particles are mixed with agent simulants and exposed to an explosion. Post-detonation analysis provides information about the temperature that the particles were exposed to.
