Undergraduate Researcher

The Applied Sciences Laboratory (ASL) at Washington State University (WSU) is seeking highly motivated and capable undergraduate students to support onsite research activities. Part-time research positions are available in three multidisciplinary research areas and may include interactions with U. S. National Laboratory scientists.

Research Areas

  • Diagnostics – Contribute to the development and fabrication of new optical probes and sensors for diagnostic applications.
  • Electrochemistry – Participate in the processing and characterization of new materials through electrochemical deposition and surface modification.
  • Advanced Materials – Support the fabrication and testing of a novel metallic alloys.

Representative Duties

  • Participate in the fabrication, sample preparation, and characterization of novel materials
  • Utilize specialized laboratory equipment. Representative examples include polishing machines, microscopes, oscilloscopes, vacuum systems, and diagnostic instrumentation
  • Assist staff in experiments and facility maintenance
  • Record data and maintain research records
  • Participate in research meetings and discussions
  • Conduct periodic inventories of lab equipment

Qualifications

Undergraduate students majoring in materials science, chemistry, physics, or engineering with:

  • Ability to perform hands-on work in the laboratory
  • Curiosity, initiative, and an interest in team-driven science
  • Reliability, attention to detail, and ability to follow directions and work independently
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
